Thursday, 22nd October 2009 (514 views) Families in Canada will get a chance to take part in gold panning and explore the latest advancements in nanotechnology when the University of Waterloo holds its annual science open house, gem and mineral show this weekend.The free event offers hands-on activities and demonstrations for children aged up to eight, as well as their families, Exchange magazine reports. For the first time, the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) will be displaying at the open house, which takes place on Saturday, October 24th at the Centre for Environmental and Information Technology. The WIN was approved by the Canadian senate in June 2008. Its construction cost C$160 million (£91.9 million) and facilities include the Centre for Integrated RF Engineering, one of the few clean room facilities in Canada designed for the development of gold films. Elsewhere, the gem and mineral show, which runs on both Saturday and Sunday, will offer youngsters the opportunity to take part in gold panning, as well as the chance to dig for fossil fish and ancient shark teeth.
