Symposium marks opening of nanotech "machine shop"The news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Friday, 25th September 2009 (1246 views) Washington University in St Louis (WUSTL) is holding a two-day symposium to showcase its new centre for the engineering and manufacture of nanoscale materials such as gold nanoparticles. The $8 million (£5 million) Nano Research Facility and Center for Materials Innovation was built by the Missouri university after the National Science Foundation invited the institution to join its 14-member nanotechnology network, the Record reports. Dr Dong Qin, associate dean for research at WUSTL's School of Engineering and Applied Science, said it will act as a "machine shop" for both academic and industrial scientists, providing them with the instruments necessary to manipulate, engineer and manufacture nanoscale materials. The new research centre comprises four labs in all for micro and nano-fabrication, surface characterisation, particle technology and bio-imaging. WUSTL organised the symposium, which concludes today (September 25th), to showcase the research facilities and provide workshops examining advances in the field of nanotechnology. One of these sessions looked at cost-effective methods of creating nanoparticles that harness the ability of atoms to produce self-assembling structures such as miniature gold boxes.
