Scientists in the US have developed a way of placing nanowires on pre-assembled structures - a move that could see the use of such nanotechnology increase in the electronics sector.

According to Nanowerk News, researchers at the University of California in San Diego have managed to accurately choose the location of nanowires - which are often made from gold - by paying special attention to the signal frequency emitted during the process.

"We saw the problem of assembly to be a significant and challenging hurdle that will need to be overcome to realise the benefits of nanowire-based devices," researcher Sourobh Raychaudhuri told the news source.

He explained that the work carried out has demonstrated the importance of "frequency and electrode geometry" when placing nanowires on narrow electrodes.

It is hoped that the breakthrough will improve the manufacturing processes of items such as transistors and optical devices.

Elsewhere in the nanotechnology sector, scientists have succeeded in using nanoparticles to create self-assembling bridges, which could aid the production of optical filters.
