The University of Pittsburgh's department of chemistry has received a $500,000 (£312,000) grant to enable it to carry out nanoscience research.

Funding for the scheme, which will result in the establishment of the Nanomaterials Characterisation Laboratory at the further education establishment, has come from the PPG Industries Foundation, which is run by Pittsburgh-based paint and chemicals supplier PPG.

Dean of arts and sciences John Cooper explained that the money will help the education centre to "renovate and improve" its laboratories, as well as recruit "world-class" researchers.

"Nanomaterials are currently used to make plastics for eyeglasses, computer displays and cameras that are lighter, stronger and more durable," he stated.

Gold is frequently used in the development of nanomaterials and Mr Cooper added that, in the future, the technology will be able to continually monitor and test blood, food, water and air.

Elsewhere in the sector, Dr Mingdi Yan of Portland State University has today claimed that nanotechnology will play a key role in future medical developments.
