Research grants worth £16.5 million have been awarded to UK scientists using nanotechnology to improve healthcare.

The ten grants have been provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and are part of a research programme titled Nanoscience through Engineering to Application.

Researchers at universities around the UK are currently utilising nanotechnology - in which gold is often a key material - to work on treatments for cancer, Aids, strokes and influenza.

"The research we are funding is about using nanotechnology to develop healthcare solutions for the future," head of nanotechnology and next generation healthcare at the EPSRC John Wand stated.

He added that the work will result in treatments that are both cheaper to use and more effective than current methods.

In related news, scientists at the University of Southampton have received over £1 million in funding from the Nano Research Group to enable them to continue work on new blood testing kits that can be used in doctors' surgeries.
