Friday, 17th April 2009 (1288 views) A grant has been awarded to help researchers using nanotechnology to tackle prostate cancer.Scientists at the University of Leicester are attempting to develop a strategy for early diagnosis and treatment, with a view to applying the findings to more aggressive types of cancer. And Dr Wu Su has been given £321,000 by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for the work. The team is using nanotechnology - which often involves gold - to create magnetic nanoparticles that act as probes, identifying and destroying cells earlier than traditional methods are able to. Dr Wu noted that cure rates of prostate cancer depend significantly on early diagnosis, adding: "The technology that we are developing offers the potential of both the identification and treatment of prostate cancer in a highly selective manner." Nanowerk News recently reported that a group of researchers at the University of Missouri is using nanotechnology to develop a means of delivering drugs to cancerous cells.
