A Saudi Arabian nanotechnology firm set up to produce nanomembranes has begun operations, it has been announced.

The Saudi Nanotechnology Company is the first in the kingdom to specialise in the sector, which often involves the use of gold in areas such as medicine, agriculture and industry.

Commenting on the launch of the firm, chairman Prince Bader Bin Saud explained that it would allow Saudi Arabia to compete with world developments in the area of nanotechnology,

"We must be the first in terms of the operational requirements associated with the use of nanotechnology in the water sector," he noted, adding that this is crucial due to the high costs of producing desalinated water and increasing consumption of the liquid.

Elsewhere in the nanotechnology sector, scientists at the University of Florence have developed a way of preserving ageing books using nanoparticles.
