A 24-c gold medallion will be presented to Dr Ronald Levy, chief of oncology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, to reward him for his efforts in his chosen field of study.

Dr Levy has been awarded the 2009 King Faisal International Prize in Medicine following his research into combating cancer using the body's own immune system.

As well as winning the 200g medallion, he will also receive $200,000 (£136,244) for developing the drug Rituxan that has been used to treat over one million people following its approval by the Food and Drug Administration in 1997.

Dr Levy will be presented with his prizes on March 29th in Riyadh by Saudi Arabian royalty and will be the 19th American to receive the honour.

Describing the work of his colleague, dean of the medical school Phillip Pizzo said: "Dr Ron Levy is one of the most remarkable and accomplished physician-scientists in the world."

Meanwhile, a report issued at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society has revealed a new technique using hollow gold nanospheres could help lower the growing number of deaths from skin cancer.
