Nanotechnology 'on the rise' in FinlandThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Friday, 13th March 2009 (1465 views) The use of nanotechnology in Finnish industry is on the increase, a new survey has revealed.Spinverse's report into the number of nanotechnology companies operating in the country revealed that the figure has tripled since 2004. The study showed that Finland is currently home to 202 firms utlilising nanotechnology - which often involves the use of gold - with the health, chemical and communications industries leading the way. "Many key sectors of Finnish industry have, after years of determined work, shifted from developing nanotechnology to commercialisation of products," chief executive officer of Spinverse Pekka Koponen stated, adding that such companies are a "significant source of income" for the country. However, Markku Lamsa of Tekes, which commissioned the study, warned that funding from both the public and private sectors is required if these firms are to grow internationally in the coming years. Elsewhere in the sector, scientists at Brown University in the US have used gold to develop new nanoparticles that may help to treat breast cancer.
