Minnesota Partnership begins nanotech fundingThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Monday, 9th March 2009 (1589 views) The Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics has awarded research teams $5.4 million (£3.9 million) to carry out studies into the use of nanotechnology.Dr Moses Rodriguez is to co-lead the exploration, part of which will focus on the use of nanotechnology to fight diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, as well as multiple sclerosis (MS) and strokes, Post Bulletin reports. Scientists had previously developed a method of cloning an antibody isolated from one person in an effort to halt the progression of MS. And gold is now set to play a role in the investigation, as researchers plan to expose the antibody to a nanotechnology film coated with the precious metal in an effort to learn how the protein recognises molecules. Elsewhere in the nanotechnology sector, scientists at the University of California San Francisco recently succeeded in creating a nanoporous biocapsule that acts like an artificial pancreas, releasing insulin into the body as and when it is needed.
