Tuesday, 10th February 2009 (3971 views) Wales is to become home to Europe's first dedicated Nanohealth facility, it has been announced. The centre, which is to be part of Swansea University, will use nanotechnology - which often involves the use of gold - in order to develop new techniques for detecting disease and repairing skin and tissue. Portfolio director for process engineering and senior lecturer at the university Dr Chris Wright told Nursing Times that research at the centre will help improve the use of nanotechnology in the healthcare sector. "By applying techniques typically used in process engineering to regenerative medicine, we are able to not only predict and control the way cells and structures behave, but test these before they are reintroduced," he explained. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, scientists at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre have used gold nanospheres to develop a method of destroying cancer cells.
