The government has outlined a number of proposals aimed at developing the use of nanotechnology within the UK.

A cross-government group featuring ministers from a number of departments has revealed pledges that it feels are necessary to promote nanotechnology, which often features the use of gold.

The group, led by minister of state for science and innovation Lord Drayson, made seven commitments, including developing a better understanding of the needs of UK professions involved in nanotechnology and improving prioritisation of research in the area.

Lord Drayson noted that the government is "committed" to developing nanotechnology responsibly.

"We will work with all interested parties - including the public - to develop a suitable strategy that addresses both the exploitation of technologies and the management of potential risks," he explained.

It was recently announced that South Africa is to hold a conference on the topic of nanotechnology, with BuaNews reporting that 14 countries will be in attendance.
