Those involved in gold nanotechnology research may wish to apply for a share of millions of pounds' worth of funding being provided by various bodies, it has been suggested.

The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network has encouraged those engaged in nanotechnology work to put themselves forward for a piece of a combined amount of €250 million (£228 million) being offered by funding organisations.

Bodies that are making the cash available include the European Commission, the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council and the UK Technology Strategy Board.

The funding is open to applications of all stages, from basic research to full industrial implementation.

Peter Dirken of the UK Technology Strategy Board (TSB) commented: "By offering this funding the TSB hopes to stimulate innovation and encourage businesses and research institutions in different countries and territories to work together."

Gold features prominently in nanotechnology research, such as recent work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that uses gold nanoparticles to deliver cancer and AIDS-fighting drugs.
