Gold nanodots 'useful for medical science'The news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Monday, 8th December 2008 (1703 views) The usefulness of gold quantum dots in biomedical science has been highlighted by an academic.Tony Stankus, a professor at the University of Arkansas, has outlined the uses of the gold nanoparticles in an essay published on the Special Libraries Association's Biomedical and Life Sciences Division webpage. Entitled 'Good Things Come in Small Packages: Custom-Designed Nanoparticles in Drug Delivery and Medical Imaging Contrast Media', the essay contains information on a wide array of nano techniques. Gold-covered quantum dots, or nanodots, are significant for medical research as they "can rarely be successfully attacked by the body's biochemistry", Professor Stankus explained. This allows them to be introduced to the body in order for them to target tumours, he noted, adding that they can also be used to improve imaging techniques such as CAT or MRI scans. Meanwhile, Stony Brook University's publication the Statesman has highlighted how gold nanoparticles have the potential to improve alternative energy systems.
