A range of gold nanoparticle products that can be used in medical and industrial applications is now being offered by Strem Chemicals.

The 25-nanometre axial diameter gold nanorods kit is being distributed by the firm as part of its collection of metal nanoparticle packages.

Gold nanorods have "wide applications" in biological imaging, sensing, therapeutics and medical diagnostics, the company noted.

They can also be used in materials and optical processes, such as being utilised in filters, polarisers and to improve storage density for compact discs.

In medical research, they have been used in photothermal therapy to treat cancerous material with a minimal laser dosage.

Strem Chemicals opted to enter the world of nanotechnology after a collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Kohlenforschung.

Gold nanorods are part of the range offered by Nanopartz, a company that also produces spherical gold nanoparticles for use in diagnostic applications.

The particles can be bound to antibodies or DNA to be used in various medical techniques.
