"Remarkable" gold nanoparticle technique developedThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 2nd December 2008 (1608 views) Scientists have developed a novel way to produce gold nanoparticles with "remarkable efficiency" using imidazolium salts (IMSs).Researchers from the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) have successfully synthesised the tiny particles of gold, measuring between one and two nanometres, using IMSs at room temperature. This means the nanoparticles - which can be used in medical applications such as cancer treatment - can be manufactured more efficiently using a milder reaction. IBN executive director Professor Jackie Ying said that the organisation is "excited by the tremendous potential" of IMSs to make an impact on medicine and alternative energy. "Our discovery paves the way for more effective treatment of various degenerative diseases, as well as the conversion of biofuels, helping to alleviate some of the pressing concerns facing our global community," she added. Meanwhile, a new tool has been created in Australia to help teach students about the uses of nanotechnology.
