A university that carries out research into gold nanotechnology has been given a funding boost.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology has announced it has been awarded funds by the state's Commission on Science and Technology to assist researchers with the "most promising patentable inventions".

Associate vice president for technology development Judith Sheft will oversee the distribution of the finance, which includes funding grants of up to $50,000 (£33,769).

One of the faculty's innovations that shows great potential is the work being carried out by Zafar Iqbal, a research professor of chemistry, the organisation stated.

He has used highly conductive nanomaterials, such as gold quantum dots, to develop a biofuel cell that converts the body's glucose into power that drives devices including biosensors for diabetics and pacemakers.

Meanwhile, a method in which scientists can observe complex atomic systems has been developed using ultra-thin sheets of gold at the California Institute of Technology.
