Friday, 17th October 2008 (1976 views) The University of Utah has announced the launch of the Nano Institute of Utah, which will aim to provide further insight into the world of nanotechnology. It will bring together academics from the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, pharmacy and engineering in order to study materials that are as small as one-billionth of a metre. Co-director Marc Porter - whose work incorporates gold nanoparticles - said that the new facility will provide innovation that could significantly affect people's lives. "By establishing the institute, we begin bringing together the pieces and players to take nanoscience in Utah from the scientist's bench to commercialisation and beyond," he remarked. Details of the new venture will emerge at the NanoUtah 2008 conference, being held at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Another new research facility, at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, will use nanomaterials in a bid to develop next-generation lighting devices that are better for the environment.
