The use of gold nanoparticles to create structures that "exhibit unique optical and electronic properties" has been highlighted by a science website.

China-based portal ScienceNet cites work conducted by researchers from Northwestern University in the US.

Led by Wei Wu, the team made a breakthrough in the field of nanosphere photolithography - the process of using nanoparticles to focus UV light.

They tested their theory that fabricating a large area of metallic nanostructures could help to improve methods used in this area.

'Nanoholes' were perforated in gold film in order to create an efficient way of pinpointing UV light, which could potentially have benefits for applications such as high-dense data storage.

Many companies from around the world are utilising gold nanoparticles to manufacture innovative products.

These include UK-based BBInternational, Nanopartz from Salt Lake City in the US and traditional precious metal firms like Metalor and Tanaka, according to Industry Week.
