A new partnership between the World Gold Council (WGC) and Nanostellar is set to introduce gold into the automotive industry, it has emerged.

Under the new scheme, the new NS Gold product – which allows for the reduction of up to 40 per cent of noxious emissions from light and heavy diesel engines – could create "significant savings" for vehicle manufacturers.

It is thought that the successful marketing and commercialisation of the gold-based product could increase the global industrial demand for gold.

WGC chief executive officer James Burton said the organisation is "excited" to bring gold into the auto catalyst market for the first time.

"We are also pleased to see gold play a role in an application with undoubted environmental benefits," he added.

Likewise, Nanostellar chief executive officer Pankaj Dhingra said the WGC's involvement in the scheme gives it added credibility.

"WGC's marketing expertise coupled with our technical knowledge should prove a powerful combination in winning advocates for our new product," he said.

Last year, total gold demand totalled 16.1 million ounces.

In June 2007, the WGC made a presentation on developments in gold catalysis at the 20th North American Catalysis Meeting – a gathering of over one thousand leading scientists.
