New nanorod technology may help fight cancerThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Friday, 5th October 2007 (7164 views) Nanopartz has announced the release of highly monodisperse gold nanorods, which can be applied to biomedical imaging and photothermal therapy applications, according to Nanowerk. The company, a division of Concurrent Analytical, the only known commercial source providing gold nanorods and other gold nanoparticles products, has revealed that the new nanorods may be used to selectively seek out and destroy cancer tumours. According to the publication, the gold nanorods are attached to specific cancer antibodies, which group around a tumour. They are then activated with a near-infrared laser transmission from outside the body, which thermally destroys the tumour, as well as the blood vessels supplying it, without causing any damage to healthy tissue within the body. Nanowerk reported that the new gold nanorods could also aid in the contrast enhancement of x-rays and other diagnostic applications, including photothermal therapy, optical polarisers and filters and the sensitive and quick identification of biodefence agents and biomolecules.
