Gold facials are becoming all the rage for women - and possibly men - looking to avoid wrinkles without going under the surgeon's knife.

From Japan to the US, beauty enthusiasts seem to be discovering the benefits gold can bring to the skin.

Reuters reports that thin sheets of gold once used to decorate temples have wended their way onto the faces of Japanese women.

"You hardly feel it, it's so light," supporter of the treatment Kaoru Takahashi told the news agency.

According to Reuters, although not scientifically proven, the metal is thought to have circulatory and disinfectant benefits.

Pure gold leaf is used in the treatments, which also take place in the US.

In Dallas, 24-carat gold is moulded to fit the contours of the face of recipients at Luxury on Lovers, WFAA reports.

"We actually work 24-karat gold into the skin. It helps with fine lines and wrinkles, it lifts and firms. It gives the skin an incredible brightness," Spa owner Lisa Cobb was quoted as saying.
