Gold used to stop noxious diesel engine emissionsThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 17th April 2007 (4665 views) A first in diesel emissions technology has been reached with the introduction of gold as an oxidation catalyst.Nanostellar, which produces nano-engineered catalyst materials, says this golden catalyst is able to reduce noxious emissions from diesel engines by about 40 per cent. It works for both light and heavy duty diesel engines and is the same price as similar systems which use platinum, but reduced noxious gas emissions by far more. Pankaj Dhingra, the chief executive officer of Nanostellar, said: "Not only does NS Gold break performance barriers imposed by mixed platinum and palladium catalysts, but also its performance can be more easily tuned to the characteristics of a variety of diesel engines." The firm hopes it will improve the cost equation for the diesel industry because even though gold is not new to catalyst scientists, this is the first time it has been successfully adapted for use in automotive diesel oxidation catalysts. Gold is currently about half the price of platinum.
