Gold thread auction for space researchThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 9th January 2007 (5455 views) The auctioning of some gold threads by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineer Centre is intended to raise funds to be used for research.Taking place online, the auction requires a minimum bid of $8,500 (£4,380) - equating roughly to the current price of gold which is around the $625 mark an ounce. Worker at the centre Mark Mulligan is selling the eight millimetre gold threads as they are a by-product from material that were used on satellites located on Japanese and American rockets that were sent to space a few years ago. Though no bids have been received for the gold threads yet, the auction will run until January 18th so there is still time for valuable research money to be earned. Research finances are otherwise funded by Nasa as well as other agencies. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineer Centre focuses on geophysical research and technology and is dedicated to creating observing tools that are used for spacecraft, aircraft and ground-based structures.
