Friday, 15th December 2006 (7771 views) The merits and drawbacks of nanotechnology have been discussed in the current issue of the Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics by experts in the field.Gold's use in nanotechnology is widespread due to its resistance to surface oxidation. And it is used in a range of practices such as nanowires for the use of interconnections in electronic devices and nanoparticulate gold colloid utilised in biomedical assays as well as rapid tests. Authors who joined the nanotechnology debate in the journal include the director of the division of genetics at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Professor Robert Best, and member of the Nanocentre at the University of South Carolina George Khushf. Ted Hutchinson, editor of the journal, said that without bias, "this symposium will bring us a step closer to understanding the critical role nanotech will play in the future of medicine and law, and steer us towards the questions we must ask". Gold nanoparticles have also been used in the testing of new cancer treatments and integral in the rapid screening of potential triplex binders is nanotechnology.
