The Gold 2006 conference, an exposition of the field of gold science and technology co-sponsored by the World Gold Council, took place between September 3rd and 6th at the University of Limerick.

The event brought together researchers from 30 countries to learn about and discuss new applications for gold, covering the following four main themes: catalysis, chemistry, materials and nanotechnology.

A keynote presentation was made by US nanotech firm Solaris Nanosciences, Azom.com reports. Solaris is a company that is developing gold nanorod technology for use in liquid crystal displays. It is thought that these nanorods could also be used to help alleviate the symptoms of retinal disease.

Other companies that made presentations included chemical firm Degussa, which is involved in catalysts that use gold.

"The World Gold Council believes that by supporting research into the role gold can play in new technologies, it will help to raise awareness of its unique properties and boost industrial demand for gold in the long-term," said the council's head of industrial applications, Richard Holliday.
