Researchers in New York have used gold and carbon nanotubes to create nanobrushes that could have various uses in the biomedical and electronic industries.

The brush bristles are so small that a thousand could fit into a strand of hair and tests have already been conducted to ascertain what the brushes could be used for.

A gas-phase delivery technique was used to grow the nanotubes onto brush handles, with fibre wrapped in gold to help control the shape of the brushes.

Gold was wrapped around the fibres, apart from areas where the team wanted the bristles to attach.

Various applications have been tested with the brushes, including using them to remove nanoparticles in microscopic grooves, using them as electrical contacts and helping to clean and coat the inside of a capillary tube.

According to Phys Org, the researchers from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute conducted the research in line with the University of Hawaii.
